What's Up:
I enjoy family, fly fishing, big game archery and bird hunting, skiing,
hiking, squash and gardening.
My Occupation:
On the day I received my diploma from CSU in 1969 I also received my draft
notice. I went on to obtain a commission in the Adjutant General Corps.
of the USA and served out my time stationed in Japan at the former site
of the Japanese equivalent of west point. I left the service as a 1Lt.
and matriculated to law school at Drake University in Iowa. Upon
graduation in 1975 I returned to Colorado and was employed as a Division
Staff Attorney in the Labor Relations Dept. of the Mountain States
Employer's Council. In 1978 I joined the Denver law firm of Rothgerber,
Johnson and Lyons where I remained as a litigation partner and chair of
the Labor and Employment Practice Group. In 1996 I was elected Managing
Partner of the firm, a position I held until 2007. I left private
practice to become the in house General Counsel for the Colorado State
University System and the Executive Secretary to the Board of Governors.
I continue to serve in that capacity today.
My Family:
I married Janie Shetterly while at CSU where our first son Josh was born.
She accompanied me to Japan where we had a second son, Michael John. We
divorced in o/a 1982.
I then married Shirley Beck, a Kansas girl, and we've been happily married
for 29 years. We live in an old house in the Platt Park area south of
DU. Josh lives near Carlsbad Ca. and after serving in the Marines during
the first gulf war now runs an HVAC business. He has our only
granddaughter, Carlie, age 14. Michael J. graduated from CU and then
went on to become a GI doctor. He currently lives in Fort Collins and
works for the University of Colorado Hospital System. He has our three
grandsons, Andrew age 13, Sam age 10 and Charlie age 8.
Favorite Memories:
I tell people that my high school experience was one of my fondest
memories. I had a great group of friends and we had great times.
