What's Up:
The majority of
our time is filled with family and professional sports activities. Linda
and I still pound the tennis courts. Live vicariously through our son,
Bryce, who appears to be a rather gifted athlete. He has played baseball
year around for about eight years, this past year on his High School's
freshman team. That's a lot of baseball games we have attended. Against
our wishes, he played on the freshman football team and found his true
love. He has unbelievable strength, agility, and speed. It is very
likely that as a sophomore, he will play at least some of the year on
the Varsity team. Torrey Pines High School is one of the power house
football schools where we live ( CIF champions the past two years )
Playing on the Varsity at his age would be a significant accomplishment.
We also have season tickets to the Padres and Chargers. I do all of the
gardening and manage not to kill to many things. Although sports consume
a good deal of our time, we still do a lot of travel. Hawaii for water
sports and Colorado, Tahoe and Canada for skiing. Another hobby has been
collecting art. During our thirty six years of marriage, we have managed
to collect a rather large collection of interesting pieces.
My Occupation:
After High School
I attended Colorado State University. Following college I attended four
years at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. Jim Thorpe was a
classmate. Viet Nam War was going on during college and Medical School
and I had a very low draft number. Joined USN in hopes of controlling my
destiny. Draft abolished two weeks before I graduated from Medical
School. I was stuck, but had great experience in the military. Did
Pediatric Residency at Navy Regional Medical Center San Diego. Followed
this with Neurology Residency and Child Neurology Fellowship at the
University of California San Diego. Now fourteen years after high
school, I finally began to work. Had to pay my dues back to Uncle Sam,
so was stationed at the Naval Regional Medical Center Portsmouth, VA.
Linda attended Medical School in VA during that three year period. One
of her classmates was David Brown, The NASA astronaut that died in the
shuttle re-entry. We then returned to the southern Ca area. I to the
Children's Hospital in San Diego, where I joined my previous professors
of child neurology. After about four years, I took over as director of
the program. Now I was the boss of all my previous professors. This
worked out very well and I have remained in that position for the past
twenty years. We now have about a ten person department and looking for
more. I still enjoy clinical medicine, but am beginning to hate the
administrative side. Linda went to Loma Linda in Riverside county to do
her Radiology residency and Neuroradiology fellowship. My Family:
Linda (Andrews)
and I began dating in 1964. We met in Mr. Melbach's Physics class.
Ironically our first date was attending a Denver Bears baseball game. We
have never been apart since. We wanted to get married after graduation
from high school, but her parents had other ideas. We both attended
Colorado State and finally got married just before graduating. I went to
med school, while Linda worked in the biochemistry department at the med
school. Later, I reversed the role and supported Linda through med
school. Finally, after completing all of our training, it was time for
children. A rather high risk pregnancy, given Linda was in her early
40's and was spending all of her time doing angiograms with fluoroscopy
(radiation). Most fortunate to have a Gerber baby. Quit after one. No
use pushing our luck. As noted above Bryce has significant athletic
skills (maybe the radiation) and is also a gentleman (except on the
football field) and scholar.
Favorite Memories:
All the usual.
Basketball tournaments, dances, KIMN dance. Russian class for three
years. Special memories include meeting Linda. Many of my activities
during that time involved Band. Symphony, marching and dance bands.
Loved going to Colorado Springs with the marching band. After game,
would get a "trough" or "Vesuvius" at some forgotten ice cream pallor in
the Springs. Mr. Wallace and the pep band standing up and waving to
Linda and I during a basketball game. Mr. Bolin hitting me in the head
with an eraser during Biology II for talking during class (I think to
Linda). Not listening to my high school counselor, who told me I had
neither the aptitude nor grades to go to medical school.
