What's Up:
My Occupation:
I started out in high end residential interior design making rich people
look richer. For some reason, I didn't find eternal satisfaction
with this career. In a Bible study in the 80s I decided to spend the
rest of my life designing buildings for older and disabled people.
I've stayed on this mission for over 30 years, have written 3 books
on the subject and taught courses at Harvard for the last twenty
years. This led to opportunities for public speaking, mostly
keynotes at conferences for architects and designers showing how
design can make a major contribution to people's lives. When I
retired, I installed over 200 items in my own house to support aging
in place, and all are invisible. The house was featured on the cover
of The New York Times. One highlight of my career was a kitchen I
designed with Julia Child for The Smithsonian.
My Family:
I have been married for 47 years (to the same man)! He owned an
engineering firm before moving on to leadership development and
finally to subbing in Math in his retirement. He is great at getting
kids excited about Math! With two incomes and no kids, we've had an
amazing life. We have rafted the Grand Canyon, biked all over the
world with Backroads, and played 30 years of tournament tennis.
Favorite Memories:
Riding home from school with Mike Russell in his bright red MG TD classic
and riding to school with Linda and Shannon Wheeler in their Jeep
Wrangler. I also had a great time with athletics, lettering in four
sports. My worst memory was winning the shot put event and having it
announced over the loud speaker. This didn't help my social life -
nerd jocks weren't too popular in the 60s.
