What's Up:
I've been
working on a short story that's slowly morphing into a novel. I've
attended the Iowa Writers' Workshop and the Taos Writer's Workshop
but I just can't seem to finish my damn story.
After years of thinking I hated water sports I've discovered that I
love sailing, as long as someone else is doing the sailing while I
lounge on the deck sipping something cold and refreshing. I recently
returned from a 6 day vacation spent sitting on the beach on the
Outer Banks of NC. Fabulous. Loved it. Loved the sitting, loved the
ocean, loved the company (my daughter and her boyfriend and his
family). I want to go back. Soon. Tomorrow would be good.
My Occupation:
After
co-owning a custom framing/gift/toy/book store for 11 years, I got
divorced (again--great guys--we're still friends but I don't want to
live with them) and have been managing the bookstore at Lyon College
in Batesville, AR. for the past 4+ years. Lyon is a four year
liberal arts college with a student body of 500.
I enjoy the kids and the work, except during bookrush when I'd just
as soon take a couple of days off and have some root canal work
done.
My Family:
My daughter,
Alison, is 24. She graduated from Kenyon College in Ohio with a
degree in Anthropology and now lives in Baltimore.
Go see a documentary called Poetry in Wartime and watch for her name
at the end. She was the stock footage researcher, a first step
toward her goal of being a documentary film-maker.
Two and a half years ago I was reunited with my now 35 year old son.
I lost him to adoption when he was 5 weeks old but my dream of
finding and meeting and hugging him has finally come true. I
discovered that I'm a grandmother to two lovely girls. We've only
met twice so far (they live in Sacramento, CA) but I anticipate more
magical visits in the future.
I moved my mom in with me 1 1/2 years ago. She's 88 and just nutty
enough to keep things interesting. We have a great time going out to
eat and going for drives and helping each other remember what day it
is.Favorite Memories:
One of my
absolutely favorite memories is of Herb and Buddy DeArvil and some
other guys performing a very classical ballet at talent shows.
It took years for me to get the Trumpet Trio tune out of my head
(did you guys only know one song?) but I remember being impressed at
how well it was played.
I have fond memories of going to wrestling matches because the guys
were so cute in those outfits.
